From in to out, from out to in …. Canan Bozbağ’s ”Seamless” sculptures…

I’ve met Canan Bozbağ two months ago at a cafe while dining with my friends. She was sitting with her friends at the next table. An excellent woman with great peace of mind, I thought. When our eyes met, I asked her who she was. ”I am making sculptures” she said… I have already understood that she was an artist… I checked her work on the internet. Then, I went to see her exhibition recently opened at Milli Reasürans Art Gallery in Teşvikiye. Then,  we walked out to have a bite and chat.

The title of your show is  Yekpare / Seamless. Why did you pick this name?
While I am working or putting up an exhibition, I don’t really start with a concept or a title. To me, thinking about the title first and then trying to relate the works with it seems to be limiting the phase of creation. So in my case, usually the work comes first, then the title follows. Sometimes no title… My previous show didn’t have one for instance, and it is perfectly ok.This time ”Yekpare” fell fine with the content. The works form wholeness either within themselves or in relation to one another… And also with their shadows… ”Yekpare” is a word that I like both phonetically and semantically.

Is it possible to be complete in real life?
My works could be a whole when they come together or when they fall apart. I feel the same when I look at life. İn times of loneliness and in relationships… Sometimes we come together, sometimes we are on our own. The capacity of being able to handle both situations needs flexibility and it gives power.

Despite the solid nature of the material, the incredible flow and the feeling of softness you have created in your works evoke the kind of flexibility and understanding of the human soul after reaching a certain stage. Would you comment on that?
Nothing is what it seems to be… Each and every material, including the human being,  has the capacity to bend and yield. You have to respect and treat it’s natural capacity gently instead of urging or forcing it towards becoming something else.

A quotation from your catalogue: ”In is out and out is in”What does this exactly mean?
I see it as the juxtaposition of matter and content, their becoming a whole…The spaces created within the exhibition space makes it possible to look in or to look out from within… the possibility of seeing the actual work, its shadow or the work and the shadow as a whole… or the state of perceiving both in andout at once.

The materials you have picked up as the basis of your bronze sculptures indicate your closeness and attachment to nature, is it true?
Being close to nature is an indispensable part of my life. I make use of every opportunity to try and keep it going.

Urban life and nature.. What are their percentages in your life?
I don’t think I will be completely happy by choosing one over the other. City life inspire and triggers me. Nature on the other hand relaxes and nourishes me.. I am more apt to exist in balance between the two.

Are there times when the artist is dissociated from life? Or should there be?
I think dissociate from life is very unlikely and hard for an artist. Usually perceptive people become an artist. Where ever they go they are the ones who grasp the very roots of life. The creation phase may be considered as a dissociation.. yet I would retreat to name it as a ”dissociation” as well.. In the contrary it could be defined as a process of attachment, a journey towards grasping the essence of life.

If I were to ask Canan Bozbağ to describe Istanbul with five senses?

Domes, sounds of the seagulls, the smell of ”simit”, to walk in Beyoğlu and Egyptian Market while bumping into people, ”rakı” and fish in Bosphorus.

Which part of Istanbul are you from?
All around…
Do you have a dream project about Istanbul?
No; Istanbul is beyond my dreams…
What is the relationship of art to happiness?
The artist finds excitement in creating what she/he dreams of and it is a contentment once the creation surpasses the dream. The contentment multiplies if the excitement is transferred  to the viewer. People are either incurable dreamers so they just sit down and allow themselves to be carried away with dreams only, or too realistic. Art in a way shows the realistic ones the joy of dreams and the possibility of realizing their dreams, to the dreamers if they put an effort to pursue them.
You have added a distinct color to ”Bir Başka Istanbul / Yet Another Istanbul”. Thank you.

Her yerinden..
İstanbul’a dair bir hayal projeniz var mı?
Yok.
